We have created a self-empowerment curriculum based on our books that is currently being successfully used in a high school health program in Oregon to help young people address bullying, judging, shaming and controlling attempts by peers and inappropriate adults. It is designed to develop personal strength and a healthy emotional foundation.

"So much in this book! A work that offers real tools for overcoming the struggles everyone faces, not just inspiration or insight (though PLENTY of that too) but actual steps and exercises that will help you. Whatever the battle, so often we know what we need to do, but we are our own biggest obstacle. This is the first book I've read that makes sense of that and teaches how to change so we become our own best help-mate.

From Ch 19: "...in our own trials, we have the same opportunity to respond with generosity and courage. We can accept our vulnerability and limited control, and choose to act with faith and positive expectations, reaching to fulfill our potential to be our best selves. And at the end of all of our efforts, where we cease to have knowledge or control, that is where we can find God." The stories the authors share make those abstractions real, and it is so refreshing to find a book where God is neither banished as out-of-fashion nor dumbed-down in order to bring a false sense of certainty. Definitely worth owning, because you'll want to reread and refer back to it again and again.

This book is wonderfully, amazingly brilliant. Al and Jan have so generously shared their hard-earned wisdom with all of us. There are so many valuable truths here, and the kind you need to hear—or read—often before you can truly own them. Bridging Heaven reminds me of those Lonely Planet travel guides, you know the ones that make it possible to tour Thailand and actually experience the culture? Only this book guides you through the human experience and makes it possible to actually own the quality of life you are choosing to live.

The common road bumps or emotions that misdirect us from the life we imagine are brought into light and demystified in these pages, and –most importantly, with their specific exercises and personal stories, a mental bridge is created that can support us and carry us over those old paths and into the life that has been waiting for us."

The Reverend Anne Bartlett

Jill Rothman

"The information in this book is essential for anyone who wants a full and complete life. I have not found this material taught or presented anywhere! Typical psychology does not touch it. It marries psychology and spirituality beautifully, and makes it accessible for everyone"

Deirdre Barber
Dean of Students, Crater High School

"This book pulled two things together that seemed necessary for me to get past blocks. I've read a LOT of material, both spiritual and self-help. The spiritual literature seems to demand a leap of faith that I am unwilling to give without more explanation. The self-help books often lack an aspect of faith that I hope to integrate into my plan for change. Personal Strength - Spiritual Joy strikes me as the perfect balance. It pulls the idea of faith into the practical idea that feelings are real, and they are to be honored. It allows us the right to exist, and at the same time gives down-to-earth ideas for getting through difficulties. I recommend this for anyone who wants practical suggestions for difficult times."

Kathleen Finnegan
Licensed Professional Counselor

"This book is wonderful. Full of transparency compassion and strength. I found myself referring to the wisdom of Al Robins and Jan Harrell while working with my own clients...and that was only after reading the first chapter! Love yourself, love others...read the book."

Cindy Powell
MPT, ATC,STS
Physical Therapy Coordinator

"This book is a true gift from the authors, full of powerful, effective and life-changing concepts and tools, all brilliantly interwoven throughout the chapters into an unforgettable learning experience.

The book provides refreshing clarity as to what is our responsibility in our lives vs. what we need to surrender to God, and teaches the freedom of self-love that comes with letting go of the self-defeating, perfectionist and critical tendencies of our society. Also unique is the connection and outpouring of compassion by the authors through their stories and personal sharing which are filled with pearls of wisdom and laced with warmth and humor.

Don’t miss the opportunity to learn from these authors who offer us inspiration and guidance to living a more fulfilling life than ever before, and to experiencing a closer relationship with God in the process."
